Find out how much it really costs to hire a wedding DJ in Perth and what to consider to make your day unforgettable.

When planning a wedding in Perth, finding the right DJ is crucial to setting the right vibe. But how much should you budget for a wedding DJ in Perth or Western Australia? This question often lingers in the minds of many event planners and couples, especially when looking to balance cost with quality.

In this guide, we’ll explore the average costs associated with hiring a DJ in Perth, factors that influence DJ prices, and tips to help you find the perfect DJ within your budget. Whether you’re a bride-to-be or a keen bridesmaid, understanding the costs will help you make an informed choice.

Average DJ prices in Perth The cost of hiring a wedding DJ in Perth can range widely depending on several factors.
Equipment:

Top quality equipment is not cheap. Speakers range from poor quality, cheap sounding speakers to thousands (and I mean thousands) of dollars. Professional wedding DJ’s will often invest in the best quality equipment so that it is reliable, aesthetically pleasing to match your decor and loud enough for your guests. Stone Unknown uses the Electro Voice speakers, known for their quality and beauty. A pair of these costs over $4500 but is worth every cent for the types of events he performs at. Decks are the most important tool for your DJ and how they manipulate the music, run mics and provide a performance for your guests. There is a range of models on the market but once again, top quality equipment is expensive and Stone Unknown has even customised it to match the aesthetic. We could break down each item but everything from mic’s to cables must be checked, tagged, inspected, maintained and updated regularly to ensure reliability and quality to your guests.

Speakers – Evolve 50

The EVOLVE 50 speakers by Electro-Voice are renowned for their sleek design and impressive sound quality. Stone Unknown opts for the white variant, which not only delivers exceptional audio but also seamlessly blends into any event décor. These speakers are compact, powerful, and perfect for creating a refined, professional atmosphere. The investment in EVOLVE 50 ensures your guests enjoy crystal-clear sound throughout the venue, no matter the size

Lights – Gigbar Move

The Gigbar Move lighting system is an all-in-one package that enhances the mood of any event. With built-in strobes, lasers, and wash lighting, it offers versatility to match the vibe of your celebration, from romantic lighting during dinner to energising effects for the dance floor. Stone Unknown uses the Gigbar Move (in white so it doesn’t ruin your aethetic) to create an immersive experience for guests, adding to the overall ambiance while remaining visually cohesive with your décor.

Decks – Pioneer XDJ-RX2

The Pioneer XDJ-RX2 is a powerful, industry-standard controller that allows DJs to manipulate music with precision. It features a large touch screen, performance pads, and seamless integration with Rekordbox software. Stone Unknown has invested in this top-tier deck, customising it to match the event aesthetic, ensuring not only flawless sound mixing but also an appealing visual setup that complements your décor.

Microphone – SHURE PG58 (Wireless)

The SHURE PG58 wireless microphone is designed for professional use, offering reliability and clear audio for speeches and announcements. Stone Unknown utilises this microphone to ensure every word is heard clearly, without the hassle of cables or interference. The wireless feature provides flexibility, allowing guests or MCs to move freely while speaking, making it a practical choice for any event.

Experience:

All the great equipment in the world is no substitute for experience.

DJ Tiers (not including travel, holiday charges and add-on packages).

Cheap DJ (0$ – $1000):
Yes, you can get a DJ for $600, but you get what you pay for. A DJ at this cost ($0-1000) will sometimes supply poor quality equipment, offer minimal service and have limited ability to provide the professionalism you require at a wedding. A DJ in this range (not all!) will often be from an agency who cares more about filling the spot, than you. If they are a solo performer, they are often inexperienced or looking to make a quick dollar so in my experience, I couldn’t recommend  DJ in this price range. Often these DJ’s are Djing for the $$ and won’t be experienced in playing clubs, bars and festivals so their range and ability to read a crowd will be limited. Now, yes there are exceptions but my goal is to provide you with the best experience and so I can’t make a recommendation here.

Mid-Range DJ packages ($1000-$1500):
A mid-range wedding DJ often provides good equipment, good service and will keep your event alive. Mid-range DJs often offer customisable playlists, some lighting options, and better quality equipment. These DJs may also include a consultation to align on musical preferences. Often DJ’s in this area are playing at bars and clubs which is important as they stay up to date with a variety of music and can read your crowd. There are a lot of wedding DJ’s in this area, some very good and trustworthy. If the dance floor is important to your guests and you don’t want to risk your entertainment, it’s worth looking in the next category.

Premium DJ services:
If you’re looking for a DJ with extensive experience, specialised equipment, and custom features like advanced lighting and sound systems, expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 or more. Premium DJs often have a well-established reputation and are highly sought after. They are professionals with years of experience in a variety of high-pressure environments and can deliver on your dance floor vision. There are a number of DJ’s in Perth who sit in this tier who I trust when I can’t provide entertainment myself. In my opinion, this is where you want to be booking a DJ if the dance floor bit is important.

Top Tier DJ services:
If you’re paying over $3000 for a wedding package, you are paying for a “celebrity DJ” or have  chosen someone exceptionally experienced and in high demand. There are not many DJ’s who charge this in Perth for a basic package and there are only a few I could trust that is worth the cost. I’ve head of DJ’s charging upwards of $5000 and know that they are probably in the mid range, so don’t get sucked in by the marketing and self promotion. Read the reviews, ask your friends, see them at an event and chat to them before booking this level of DJ.

Factors influencing DJ prices in Perth

To better understand why DJ prices can vary, it helps to know the factors that influence these costs:

Event Duration:

The length of your event plays a major role in determining the price. DJs typically charge by the hour, and longer events require more from the DJ in terms of energy and playlist planning.

Equipment Needs:

Some DJs offer basic sound systems, while others bring advanced speakers, subwoofers, lighting, and even fog machines. If you need a full setup, this can significantly add to the cost.

Day and Time of the Event:

Weekend events, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, tend to be pricier due to higher demand. Also, evening events may incur additional fees.

DJ Experience and Reputation:

DJs with a well-established brand, significant experience, or specialised skills may charge more. If a DJ has performed at high-profile events or has been in the industry for many years, they’re likely to command higher fees.

Travel and Accommodation:

For events outside Perth, or in remote locations, you might have to cover travel and accommodation expenses, which will add to the overall cost.

Additional Services:

Some DJs offer extra services like MC duties, Cold Sparks, Ceremony setups, Extra hours, or Additional equipment. These added features enhance your event but come with additional cost as the DJ must source the required supplies.

Finding the right DJ for your budget

Here are some practical tips for finding a DJ that fits your budget while ensuring quality service:

Compare Quotes from Multiple DJs:

Don’t settle for the first DJ you find. Instead, request quotes from several DJs to compare rates, services, and what they offer in their packages.

Check Reviews and Ask for Recommendations:

Look at online reviews and ask friends or family for DJ recommendations. A DJ with a proven track record is worth paying a little extra for peace of mind.

Book Early:

If you’re planning a wedding or corporate event during peak season, secure your DJ well in advance. DJs tend to get booked months ahead, especially during wedding season. Most don’t adjust their prices for seasonality.

Ask About Setup and Teardown Costs:

Ensure the quote includes all setup and teardown times so there are no surprises on your invoice – Stone Unknown does not charge these as it is a part of the service.

Should you DIY or hire a DJ?

Some people may consider managing their own music setup. However, there are key reasons why hiring a professional DJ might be the better choice:

Technical Expertise:

DJs have access to high-quality equipment and know how to optimise sound for the venue space.

Event Flow Management:

DJs help control the pace of your event, ensuring smooth transitions and keeping guests engaged.

Reliability and Peace of Mind:

A professional DJ knows how to handle unexpected issues, like equipment failure or unexpected song requests, which can keep your event running smoothly.

Conclusion

The price of hiring a DJ in Perth varies widely based on experience, equipment, and event specifics. By understanding these costs and considering factors like event duration and DJ reputation, you can make an informed decision that fits your budget. Hiring a DJ ensures that your event will be memorable and filled with energy, helping you create an atmosphere that your guests will talk about for years to come.
